The last and ninth month of pregnancy is very crucial phase of pregnancy. One must be aware about the various changes in the body that occur during the ninth month of pregnancy and various problems faced by women during this time.
Acidity: Many women face this problem during the ninth month of pregnancy. One must take early dinner, atleast 2 hours before going to sleep. You may take a glass of cold milk before going to sleep. You can increase the height of the pillows or raise the head end of the bed so that your head is raised above the body while sleeping.
Lightening: It is the process of downward movement of baby into the pelvis. It usually occurs in the first half of the ninth month. This puts pressure on the bladder and the rectum. It may lead to increased frequency of urination which is a normal phenomenon occurring in ninth month.
Weight gain: Average weight of the baby at the beginning of ninth month is 2- 2.5kg which increases to 3-3.5kg at the end of ninth month. So the woman must take a balanced diet comprising of 60% proteins and 40% carbohydrates and fats. Diet should be rich in Pro DHA and omega 3 fatty acids.
Increased vaginal discharge: It protects against any vaginal infection occurring during this time.
Increased water retention in the body: It may lead to swelling of the body. One must ensure that patient is not suffering from any high blood pressure or anaemia.
Positioning: Some patients prefer to sit in reclining position which is a wrong habit. Reclining position does not allow downward movement of the baby and sometimes it may lead to malposition also. Sitting upright or slightly forwards is the preferred position.
Walking and exercises: One must spare 40-45 mins a day for walking. Pelvic exercises- kiegel’s , butterfly pose, squatting help in stretching and strengthening of pelvic muscles and thus increases the chance of normal vaginal delivery.
Baby’s movement: You must keep track of the daily fetal movement count. If you perceive less fetal movement, consult the doctor immediately
Sleeping position: It should be left lateral. It ensures adequate blood supply to the growing baby.
